Along with official reports from economists and the government, certain signs—such as a spike in RV sales—show that the economy is improving. Recently, a prominent London-based caterer predicted a boost in business based on improving sales of champagne. So is the “champagne effect” a true business barometer for special events? Australia: Incentive groups flock to Cairns region

Tropical North Queensland has seen a steep increase in the number of incentive groups, with 116 organisers choosing the Cairns and Great Barrier Reef region as the destination to reward top-performing employees in 2012-2013, an increase of 50 per cent. Business Events Cairns & Great Barrier Reef director Rosie Douglas said the latest Queensland Business Events Survey figures showed the lucrative incentive market was up from 78 groups the previous year. “We experienced an overall increase in international business events delegates up from 10,075 to 11,068 and this growth was largely driven by international incentive groups,” she said. Personal and executive assistants have a growing role in planning internal and external corporate events, according to a probe by venue operator Late Night London. The research – supported by C&IT – surveyed 1,500 personal and executive assistants from businesses across the UK and found 96% of them are responsible for their company’s events. Respondents noted there has been a significant change in style of events during the past three years, as the recession has impacted upon both corporate internal and external events. 44% of respondents reported that more formal, costly events had been downscaled to some extent in the past few years. However the research found that internal and external corporate events were still a priority with 68% of the PAs and EAs surveyed noting that their employer strongly valued such events. Growth in the Trade Show and Event Planning industry in Canada is heavily dependent on the size of corporate marketing budgets and the ability for consumers to spend. “Most recently, corporate profit and disposable income have been on the rise, enabling industry revenue to reach prerecession levels,” says IBISWorld industry analyst Austen Sherman. IBISWorld estimates that the industry will build on its recent strong performance and increase an additional 2.0% to $1.5 billion in 2013. Recent growth has largely been propelled by expanding client marketing budgets as a result of a significant increase in corporate profit following the recession; according to the Center of Exhibition Industry Research (CEIR), nearly 40.0% of business-to-business marketing budgets in 2011 were spent on trade shows. However, the industry did have its plans for growth interrupted during the early part of the past five years. According to Sherman, “The Canadian economy mired in a recession for the majority of 2009, weighing on client marketing expenditures.” The effects on industry revenue were immediate and aggressive, resulting in a decline of 7.0% in that year.
