Despite uncertainties over the global economy, Hong Kong’s meeting and exhibition industry remains strong, according to a Hong Kong Exhibition and Convention Industry Association (HKECIA) survey. The survey of exhibition activities in 2013 was sent to 100 exhibitions, and responses from 93 exhibitions were recorded. Findings have showed that the total number of exhibiting companies in Hong Kong has increased by 3.7 per cent compared to 2012 to reach 62,101. Growth across all sectors was observed, particularly significant in international exhibiting companies, which experienced an 18.8 per cent jump, accompanied by a 5.5 per cent rise in regional exhibiting companies. Visitor numbers have seen a year-on-year rise of 6.5 per cent to 1,839,424. The number of Mainland Chinese visitors increased by 12.8 per cent, while Hong Kong visitors grew by 7.4 per cent. The Association for Inbound Golf Tourism Philippines (AIGTP) will bid to host the Asian Golf Tourism Convention (AGTC) in 2016, president Connie Mamaril said. Event organisers now have more options to consider at Myanmar’s capital city and beyond, with Hilton Worldwide having signed agreements with local conglomerate Eden Group to manage five properties across Myanmar, following the country’s sweeping social and economic reforms. Eden Group’s two most recent properties will be rebranded into Hilton Nay Pyi Taw at the capital city and Hilton Ngapali Beach Resort at Rakhine State. Both properties will complete the brand makeover by October 2014. In the next three years, the hotel group will extend its presence across the country with Hilton Bagan in 2016, located in the Bagan ancient city next to Ayeyarwady River that is known for its high number of Buddhist temples. Canada, the United States, Germany, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Australia, New Zealand and the United Arab Emirates are the top 10 destinations outside of Asia where Asian meeting planners most want to hold events, according to new research by Reed Travel Exhibitions’ (RTE) China Incentive, Business Travel & Meetings Exhibition (CIBTM). RTE Surveyed CIBTM hosted buyers and found that they are planning more meetings this year than last, and are increasingly interested in discovering new destinations outside their region. “Things are looking very positive for this year with nearly two-thirds of Asian buyers from our survey are reporting an increase in the volume of events they were involved in over the past 12 months and 55 percent expected a growth over the next 12 month,” CIBTM Project Manager Jeffrey Xu said in a statement. “To add to this, 73 percent also predict use of new destinations over the next 12 months, which is a very positive indicator for companies around the globe considering their participation at the show.” Read more
