We are on location at GIBTM in Abu Dhabi, where we noticed an intriguing headline in The National newspaper: “Dubai reveals master plan for 500,000 medical tourists a year.”
This will be an exciting challenge for Steen Jakobsen, recently appointed director of the Dubai Convention Bureau, as catalysts to the emirate’s diversification plan of its economy away from a petrochemical dependency. Jakobsen arrived from Copenhagen where he masterminded the city’s green credentials with his winning bid for Cop 15.
This news, combined with yesterday’s announcement from Essa Al Maidoor, director general of the Dubai Health Authority (DHA), that 22 new hospitals are to be built in time to coincide with the arrival of the 2020 World Expo, will provide a welcome context to the emirate’s bids for medical congresses.
