New York, London and Paris are the most “global” cities in the world, i.e. those that best know how to attract and retain companies, talent, ideas, capital and innovation, generating benefits that extend well beyond their borders. The map of leader destinations is however set to change significantly in the next 10-20 years: the rankings will be topped by the cities currently defined as “emerging” that are best able to develop their human capital, business activity and innovation. These conclusions emerged from the Global Cities Index compiled by consultancy A.T. Kearney, which looked at the global credentials of 85 cities in five continents. The companion Emerging Cities Outlook identifies the 35 cities of low- and middle-income countries with the greatest potential for development in the next decade. The purpose of the study is to provide companies with recommendations on where to direct future investment, and to give politicians and city managers tools on which to base programmes to promote competitiveness. Cirque du Soleil looking to expand into Broadway-style shows

Cirque du Soleil is looking to diversify its repertoire by expanding into Broadway-style shows and is creating a new division called Cirque du Soleil Theatrical that will be headed by Las Vegas theater impresario Scott Zeiger. The Montreal-based Cirque said on Tuesday that the new division will mount new productions that will use the company’s signature style and aesthetic, but that will provide a “very different experience” for Cirque du Soleil audiences. Gone are the days when a venue’s ability to host large-scale events was measured on square footage alone. Today conference planners increasingly search for event venues that offer size plus something more—designs that allow them to make a meeting feel, well, less like a meeting. When long-standing New York City nightclub Marquee reopened as a music-focused venue in January, the layout was rethought to also make it better for business events. Owners wanted to maintain a hip club atmosphere but create a better sense of arrival and a space that was more transformable and adaptive for corporate groups. Josh Held of Josh Held Design handled the redesign. “We took a club with a funky entrance—you entered in front of a bar packed with people, there was no procession—and took the roof off and raised it,” Held says. The 1,200-person space was converted into a warehouse-like room with 28-foot ceilings and industrial design elements. The venture, called Sid Lee Entertainment, was announced tonight at the Cannes Lions festival. The new company will craft live experiential programs that are linked to a brand’s attributes. Its first clients are Absolut Vodka and Lolë, a women’s apparel company. For Absolut, in upcoming months the venture will unveil a live event targeted at a specific market, which will include online content designed for that targeted audience, according to an agency rep. Olympics boost London’s ICCA ranking

London has climbed to sixth place in the International Congress and Convention Association’s (ICCA) world rankings report, released today (13 May). In 2012, in addition to hosting the Olympics and Paralympic Games, London hosted a record number of global business events, which has now elevated the city’s world ranking from seventh place last year to sixth. In 2008, London was ranked at 19th position. The ICCA report showed London ahead of competitors such as New York, Beijing, Hong Kong, Chicago and Sydney whilst overtaking some of its closer European rivals such as Rome, Athens, Munich, Brussels and Edinburgh. London has also recently secured some of the most prestigious medical congresses, including The European Society of Cardiology (ESC) in 2015 and the European Association for the Study of the Liver in 2014.
