Thousands of delegates from across the veterinary profession attended the record breaking British Small Animal Veterinary Association (BSAVA) Congress at the ICC earlier this month. This event, which is the largest of its kind in the world, is where the vets and vet nurses learn the latest treatments and update their scientific skills.
Official figures show that 6311 veterinary professionals were in Birmingham over the four days. Amanda Stranack, Head of Congress for BSAVA cites the central location, and the flexible space at the ICC and adjacent sister venue the NIA as key factors in making the city a great host.
Amanda says “Birmingham’s central location in the UK with an international airport, plus good rail and road networks has kept us in the city for almost 25 years. We have a comprehensive scientific programme as well as an exhibition, so the ICC provides the quality conference space for our 6000-plus delegates – with the NIA hosting nearly 300 exhibitors. We have explored alternative cities and venues, but our priority is to deliver lectures and an exhibition alongside each other in a place that offers the best possible delegate experience – and on our scale, right now this is found in Birmingham.”
The four day event utilises all of the ICC as well as exhibition and conference space at the NIA, where 300 exhibitors displayed new products, services and research findings. Outgoing BSAVA President Professor Michael Day was delighted that so many had attended, and he felt that once again Congress was distinguished by a hallmark of quality. “What continues to set BSAVA Congress apart is simply ‘quality’” he said. “The quality of the faultless organisation, the quality of the scientific content, and the quality of our exhibition and incomparable social programme.”
