Our Italian soap bubble performer did a great job during the world’s leading trade fair for bakery, confectionery and snacks that took place in Munich.The iba has been the meeting place for experts of the bakery, pastry, and snack trade since 1949. It is the platform for innovations from the entire trade and provides a complete overview of all novelties on the market. The most successful companies from artisan bakeries, via wholesale bakeries, through to the industrial solution meet up there. Our performer presented 20 shows over 5 days and got a huge success. With the International Hotel Investment Forum (IHIF) wrapping up in Berlin, it seems timely to look at some recent news from Europe’s growing hotel scene. Here are just a few notable announcements from recent weeks: One of the biggest recent hotel announcements was Scandic‘s agreement to acquire Rica Hotels, adding 72 hotels to its existing portfolio. In Norway alone, Scandic’s coverage will be increased by 65 hotels, making it a nationwide chain. Today, Scandic has 151 hotels in the Nordic region, including 19 in Norway, while Rica Hotels’ portfolio currently includes 65 hotels in Norway and 7 in Sweden.

Munich Airport to Get New Hilton Hotel

Hilton Worldwide has signed an agreement to rebrand a 389-room hotel within Munich Airport under its flagship Hilton Hotels & Resorts brand. The new hotel is set to open in 2015. Significantly, the property is the only hotel with a direct link to the main terminal building, and is the latest addition to the company’s expanding portfolio of hotels at European transport hubs. Under the new agreement, Hilton will manage the upper upscale hotel on behalf of owners Allresto Flughafen München Hotel und Gaststätten GmbH, a wholly owned subsidiary of Flughafen München GmbH, from January 2015. The hotel, which is currently operating as Kempinski Munich Airport Hotel, will undergo a significant renovation and a further 160 rooms will be added to the existing building in 2017. ESPN nixes X Games in Brazil, Spain, Munich and France

Eighteen months after ESPN trumpeted a global expansion that doubled the number of its events – with first-ever summer X Games in Barcelona, Munich and Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil – the company has ended its international blitz. On Thursday the network announced it was nixing all international X Games events, including the four-year old Winter X Games in Tignes, France, and dropping the suddenly-dead “Global X” plan from six contests to two, with only Aspen and Austin remaining. In May 2012, the network announced a global expansion into three international cities, including its first-ever push into South America’s vibrant action-sports scene. CIBTM 2013 May Be Biggest Show to Date

We hear that this fall’s CIBTM, which is set to take place from September 2 – 4 at the China National Convention Centre (CNCC) in Beijing, may be the largest edition of the show to date. Hosted Buyer applications have doubled, (compared to this time last year) as many top level meetings buyers with proven purchasing power sign up to place their business with both regional and international participating exhibitors. CIBTM has also witnessed a notable increase in the amount of Corporate and Association Trade Visitors who have signed up to attend the show. Jeffrey Xu, CIBTM Project Manager, Reed Travel Exhibitions said that the majority of the exhibitors want to meet with associations and corporates, “as this is where a lot of the big business in the meetings industry lies. “The quality of trade visitor registrations this year has been very promising, and we are delighted to see such a rise in the the number of Associations and Corporates. Every year, the European Patent Office honors outstanding inventors for their contribution to technological progress, to economic growth and to society and our daily life in general with the European Inventor Award. Following a long-standing, successful tradition, Amsterdam joined the exclusive circle of award ceremony locations in 2013. The EPO’s award ceremony also has a long tradition for VOK DAMS. Since 2007, the Munich Team supports this outstanding event. Only recently, VOK DAMS was asked to continue designing and implementing the European Inventor Award until 2017. The award is presented in five categories: industry, SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises), research, non-European countries and lifetime achievement. Olympics boost London’s ICCA ranking

London has climbed to sixth place in the International Congress and Convention Association’s (ICCA) world rankings report, released today (13 May). In 2012, in addition to hosting the Olympics and Paralympic Games, London hosted a record number of global business events, which has now elevated the city’s world ranking from seventh place last year to sixth. In 2008, London was ranked at 19th position. The ICCA report showed London ahead of competitors such as New York, Beijing, Hong Kong, Chicago and Sydney whilst overtaking some of its closer European rivals such as Rome, Athens, Munich, Brussels and Edinburgh. London has also recently secured some of the most prestigious medical congresses, including The European Society of Cardiology (ESC) in 2015 and the European Association for the Study of the Liver in 2014.
