San Diego Convention Center Forecasts Strong 2014

2013 was not a great year for San Diego, with its former mayor generating decidedly unfavorable headlines, the tourism authority seeing significant cutbacks and plans to expand the convention center generating plenty of controversey. But with an expansion plan approved, 2014 seems poised to be a much stronger year for the city. In the coming year, the San Diego Convention Center Corporation is expecting to boost the region’s economy in several ways. Perhaps most significantly, the economic impact from events held in the center is expected to reach $1.4 billion, with $606.7 million in direct attendee spending and total tax revenues nearing $20.6 million. So far, 111 events are booked for the center, with more expected to book in upcoming months. Of these events, 70 are primary events and are expected to attract over half a million out-of-town attendees. Total expected attendance is estimated at 858,115 with current figures expected to increase over the year. This marks the center’s highest attendance since 2008, when 951,618 people attended events. Top convention destinations: Orlando, Chicago, Las Vegas

Orlando, Las Vegas – and National Harbor, Md. Those cities are among the top 50 destinations in the USA this year for meetings and corporate events, according to Cvent, a technology company that connects event planners with over 200,000 venues. Looking at its booking data from July 2012 to June 2013, the company found that Orlando, followed by Chicago and Las Vegas were the top go-to spots. But the list also included several new entrants, such as National Harbor, Md., Coronado, Calif., and Naples, Fla. What we see is that things shift around based on how hotels and cities invest to make the cities more attractive . . . in a very competitive market,” says Eric Eden, Cvent’s vice president of marketing. Basel’s new convention centre opens

Messe Basel has opened in Switzerland, offering a three-storey exhibition hall with capacity for 3,000 delegates. The multi-functional event hall has opened on the eve of Basel World 2013, the Swiss city’s most lucrative annual trade exhibition for the watch and jewellery industry, following 22 months of construction work. Designed by local architects Herzog & de Meuron – the masterminds behind the Tate Modern’s recent extension in London – the hall is connected to the Congress Center Basel and enables the city to now host events with around 5,000 delegates.
