New Luxury Collection Hotel to Open in California’s Napa Valley

California‘s Napa Valley is getting a swank new retreat that will appeal to small, high-end corporate groups: The Luxury Collection will open Las Alcobas, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Napa Valley in the fall of 2015 after completing a multi-million dollar renovation that will transform the former Grandview Hotel & Spa. The hotel sits on 3.4 acres and consists of the historic Acacia House, which was built as a private residence in 1907 and converted into a hotel in 1911, as well as several cottages that were added in the 1940s. The re-use project will reconfigure existing structures, preserve the architecture and add necessary modern touches to the guest rooms. Las Alcobas will have 57 guest rooms and suites, a signature restaurant, a 3,500-square-foot spa and an outdoor pool. San Diego Convention Center Forecasts Strong 2014

2013 was not a great year for San Diego, with its former mayor generating decidedly unfavorable headlines, the tourism authority seeing significant cutbacks and plans to expand the convention center generating plenty of controversey. But with an expansion plan approved, 2014 seems poised to be a much stronger year for the city. In the coming year, the San Diego Convention Center Corporation is expecting to boost the region’s economy in several ways. Perhaps most significantly, the economic impact from events held in the center is expected to reach $1.4 billion, with $606.7 million in direct attendee spending and total tax revenues nearing $20.6 million. So far, 111 events are booked for the center, with more expected to book in upcoming months. Of these events, 70 are primary events and are expected to attract over half a million out-of-town attendees. Total expected attendance is estimated at 858,115 with current figures expected to increase over the year. This marks the center’s highest attendance since 2008, when 951,618 people attended events. Gone are the days when a venue’s ability to host large-scale events was measured on square footage alone. Today conference planners increasingly search for event venues that offer size plus something more—designs that allow them to make a meeting feel, well, less like a meeting. When long-standing New York City nightclub Marquee reopened as a music-focused venue in January, the layout was rethought to also make it better for business events. Owners wanted to maintain a hip club atmosphere but create a better sense of arrival and a space that was more transformable and adaptive for corporate groups. Josh Held of Josh Held Design handled the redesign. “We took a club with a funky entrance—you entered in front of a bar packed with people, there was no procession—and took the roof off and raised it,” Held says. The 1,200-person space was converted into a warehouse-like room with 28-foot ceilings and industrial design elements. Upon entering, guests encounter a long procession that leads them to the middle of the expansive open space—as Held puts it “channeling the exhilaration of stumbling upon an underground music venue,” but on a much grander level. NAMM Holds 2014 Show at Anaheim Convention Center Ahead of $180 Million Expansio

The National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) has signed a new five-year contract with the City of Anaheim and the Anaheim Convention Center to continue to hold the industry-only show through 2018. There is a planned $180 million project to expand the 1.6 million-square-foot Anaheim Convention Center and its 200,000-square-foot meeting and exhibit space. The economic impact of hosting NAMM in Anaheim and Orange County is approximately $70 million dollars.
