The scheduled opening of Rome’s new conference centre, the “Nuvola” [“Cloud”], designed by architect Massimiliano Fuksas, which will relaunch the capital on the international events market, continues to slide. Last week, the Mayor of Rome, Ignazio Marino, visited the site, and commented that “it would be unforgivable to leave a building destined to become one of the highlights of the new city skyline unfinished. The completion of the Nuvola will take national and international events in Rome to a new level”.
There are still many question marks hanging over the precise date on which the work will be finished. Pierluigi Borghini, chairman of contractor Eur SpA, said that 76% of the work had been completed, but EUR 170 million was still needed to bring it to a close. In July, the local municipal authority and the government sent letters guaranteeing financing, but if this funding does not arrive before Christmas, the date currently set for the centre’s opening (the first half of 2015) will not be met.
