South Africa may have secured the lion’s share of international events since it staged the 2008 Fifa World Cup, but increasingly event organisers are discovering what the rest of Africa has to offer.
At Meetings Africa, held earlier this year in Johannesburg, the sheer increase in delegates – 67 per cent – and the rise in exhibitor numbers from outside of South Africa shows the continent as a whole is maturing. Lesotho, Zambia, Kenya, Namibia, Botswana, Tanzania, Mauritius, Mozambique and Swaziland were among the destinations exhibiting for the first time.
“Africa provides event planners with lots of options, and new products are being developed every year as airline connectivity improves,” says David Sand, managing director of Ovation South Africa.
