According to statistics released by Dubai’s Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) today, Dubai’s hotels welcomed more than 5.8 million tourists in the first half of 2014 –the highest number of visitors ever achieved in the first six months of the year. In the first half of 2014, guest numbers across all establishments (hotels and hotel apartments) reached 5,828,449, an increase from the same period in 2013. Dubai’s top 10 tourism source markets remained unchanged bar slight changes in positioning. Here’s a roundup of hotel news for the week that will add on amenities for meeting attendees. New York’s The Knickerbocker hotel revealed plans for a new rooftop cigar lounge. The lounge is opening as part of a partnership with tobacconist Nat Sherman, and will offer a selection of Nat Sherman cigars and cocktails. The partnership will also allow the hotel to sell Nat Sherman cigars at the fourth floor restaurant and bar, Charlie Palmer at the Knick. The hotel has over 2,200 square feet of meeting space, including a function room that hosts up to 250 and a pre-event Foyer adjacent to the hotel bar. The hotel also offers rooftop space, the restaurant and bar and the James @ the Knick, a receptions facility for up to 40. Madison, Wisconsin’s Edgwater hotel recently joined Historic Hotels of America, a program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Live Nation announced the re-opening of the Masonic in San Francisco, following a multi-million dollar renovation project that took place during spring and summer 2014. The Masonic will open its doors in September and include a line-up this fall that includes Train, Daryl Hall & John Oates, The 1975, Old Crow Medicine Show and others. Located at the top of San Francisco’s historic Nob Hill, the Masonic’s re-opening will unveil a transformed space in the Bay Area. Renovations include a new concert stage; sound system tailored specifically to the room; VIP room for 300, with views of Nob Hill, San Francisco and the Bay; VIP boxes with wait service and private restrooms; and a new general admission open floor with tiered levels, bringing the venue’s general admission capacity to 3,300. As a result of the upgrades, the uses of the Masonic have expanded—general admission concerts, seated concerts, private receptions, meetings and classroom-style events, or private dinners with entertainment on stage. Good news for inbound travel to the United States: According to a projection by the research and economics team at the U.S. Travel Association, the country is on pace to exceed the goal of 100 million annual international visitors set by the National Travel and Tourism Strategy (NTTS) for 2021. When the Obama administration laid out the NTTS on May 10, 2012, a rate of 4.8 percent annual growth was needed to reach its 2021 goal. The country is ahead of that pace, achieving an average of 5.5 percent annual growth in the two years since (growth from 2011-2013). In raw numbers, 4.8 percent growth would have meant 6.2 million new visitors; the country has bested that mark by 876,000 visitors, adding 7.1 million new inbound international travelers in the last two years. The $185-million Cromwell hotel is scheduled to open on the Las Vegas Strip this spring and will have the first restaurant by TV personality Giada De Laurentiis. The boutique hotel, which will probably be among the smallest on the Strip, is a renovation of the former Bill’s Gamblin’ Hall, also known as the Barbary Coast, which closed in February 2013. The property was originally going to be a Gansevoort hotel, but that deal fell apart in October and the hotel’s future remained uncertain.
