Middle East: UAE in top three preferred destinations for meetings and incentives in EMEA

The UAE has emerged among the top three destinations for meetings and events in the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region in the latest Pacific World Destination Index, which identifies the leading destinations in the world for the meetings and incentives industry. Released by integrated global DMC and event management organisation, Pacific World, the index, now in its second edition, has quickly emerged as one of the definitive guides for both country and regional performance in the sector. In the EMEA region, Italy bagged the top spot thanks to the popularity of Milan as a meetings destination. This city’s infrastructure, convention and meeting spaces, transport and connectivity, as well as being chosen to host World Expo 2015, all helped it clinch the position. The Monaco-French Riviera region was second on the rankings based on its popularity as a destination for the meetings and events sector with its natural beauty and established infrastructure. 6 natural reserves planned for Dubai Dubai: Six new natural reserves will be set up in Dubai following a decree issued by His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE, in his capacity as Ruler of Dubai. The reserves will be set up in six areas in the emirate: Hatta mountains reserve, Al Wuhoosh desert reserve, Al Marmoom desert reserve, Dubai natural reserve (Al Maha), Jebel Nazwa reserve, and Al Ghaf reserve in Nazwa. The decree aims to protect the environment, preserve natural resources and contribute to the development of ecotourism. The decree also activates the role of the Dubai Municipality in managing natural reserves and giving it the capabilities to achieve these objectives. Read More

MiddleEast: GIBTM all set for Expo bounce

The Gulf meetings sector was surrounded by positivity long before November’s news that Dubai had won the right to host Expo 2020, the biggest event on the planet after the FIFA World Cup and the Olympic Games. The indicators, both statistical and anecdotal, were already pointing to an improving picture, with the organisers of the 2014 Gulf Incentives, Business, Travel and Meetings exhibition (GIBTM) predicting a year-on-year growth of seven percent from 2014 to 2020 when the World Expo will take place. Expo, though, is now a clear target on the horizon, with the accompanying infrastructure and hospitality developments helping to provide more facilities for meetings and a huge billboard for Dubai’s readiness to host them. MiddleEast: ICCA 50-year report reveals sector boom

The past and potential exponential growth of the association meetings market has been revealed in a report commissioned to mark ICCA’s 50-year anniversary. The report, A Modern History of International Association Meetings: 1963- 2012, released at the end of 2013 reveals US$56.4 billion was the aggregated estimated total expenditure on all meetings in the ICCA Association Database that have taken place over the last five years. ICCA’s membership has increased from just seven members in 1963 to 917 in 2013 and five-year aggregated data of the last 50 years shows that since 1963, the number of meetings in the ICCA Association Database has grown by 10 percent each year. This means the number of regularly-occurring, international association meetings taking place doubled every 10 years. The pace at which meetings are occuring is also gathering momentum. The database shows 173,432 meetings took place between 1963 and 2012 with 1,795 or one percent of those staged between 1963 and 1967 and 54,844 or 31.6 percent staged between 2008 and 2012. Read More

Middle East: International Sailing Federation set to dock in UAE capital

Abu Dhabi, capital of the UAE, is pitching to host the International Sailing Federation’s (ISAF’s) annual Presidential Election meeting in 2016. The plans were presented in collaboration with Abu Dhabi Sailing & Yacht Club and Abu Dhabi Sports Council at the 2013 ISAF Annual Conference in Muscat, Oman in November. If successful, the event would provide the ideal platform for promoting the emirate’s sailing credentials, according to the Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority (TCA Abu Dhabi). “We are acutely aware that maritime sports attractions are an indispensable component of a waterfront tourism offering,” said Ahmed Thani Al Romaithi, Chairman of Abu Dhabi Sailing and Yacht Club. “We look forward to being able to demonstrate these to an international audience during the Volvo Ocean Race and, hopefully, to ISAF members during their 2016 conference.” Abu Dhabi is set to host its second stopover of the Volvo Ocean Race between December 2014 and January 2015.
