Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony to reflect ‘the voice, personality & character’ of Glasgow

COMMONWEALTH Games organisers have vowed to give Glaswegians the main voice in the opening ceremony as they welcome the world to their city. David Zolkwer, the Glasgow 2014 head of ceremonies, promised the Celtic Park event on Wednesday night would not merely be a spectacle but would speak directly to the rest of the world. Zolkwer also claimed that the ceremony would both celebrate the diversity of Glasgow and what the city and Scotland have in common with the 70 other competing nations. The personal touch is highlighted by the fact that each nation will be introduced to the crowd by a different citizen of Glasgow. Zolkwer, who directed the 2002 ceremonies in his native Manchester, said: “We knew right from the start that the source of inspiration and the voice and character and personality of the ceremony had to reflect and explicitly include the people of the city. “So that’s why you will see a lot of Glaswegians and Scots and a lot of people from further afield and you will also hear them. “We have a mass cast but we have set out to represent lots and lots of individuals. ABU DHABI: The seventh season of Pepsi Indian Premier League was flagged off in Abu Dhabi with an opening event rich in cricketing pedigree as well as a generous dose of fun and frolic. It began with a welcome note by H.E. Sheikh Nahayan Mubarak Al Nahayan, Minister of Culture, Youth & Community Development, in which he spoke of the UAE’s determination as a nation to move forward in the sporting field. Then it was time for host, Ravi Shastri to invite the eight IPL captains to vow their allegiance to maintain the integrity of cricket by signing the MCC Spirit of Cricket plaque. The Indian cricket board (BCCI) is unlikely to stage an opening ceremony for IPL 7 which begins in the UAE on April 16. The UAE government has planned a gala dinner on April 15 but there are no plans, like in the past, to bring in Bollywood stars or international pop icons to perform at the event. According to BCCI sources, this will ensure that cricket remains the main focus during the event. “This decision to avoid a mega opening ceremony was taken by top board officials. Myanmar plans to stage grand opening of SEA Games

Myanmar is planning to hold opening and closing ceremonies of the 27th South-East Asian Games on a grand scale in December, official media reported Tuesday. The SEA Games opening and closing ceremonies will be staged at Wunna Theikdi stadium in Nay Pyi Taw with the help of technical assistance from about 200 Chinese experts, said the New Light of Myanmar. The young musicians who played Nimrod at the London 2012 opening ceremony are among the nominees at this year’s Royal Philharmonic Society Music Awards. The London Symphony Orchestra’s LSO On Track initiative saw 80 young musicians perform Elgar’s ninth Enigma variation at the start of the 27 July ceremony. LSO On Track will be contesting for the learning and participation prize at the awards, to be held in London on 14 May. Opera star Bryn Terfel is among the big names nominated in other categories. The Welsh bass-baritone is up for the singer prize, alongside the English mezzo-sopranos Alice Coote and Sarah Connolly and the US tenor Bryan Hymel.
