Dubai Receives Record Number of Visitors for the First Half of Year

According to statistics released by Dubai’s Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) today, Dubai’s hotels welcomed more than 5.8 million tourists in the first half of 2014 –the highest number of visitors ever achieved in the first six months of the year. In the first half of 2014, guest numbers across all establishments (hotels and hotel apartments) reached 5,828,449, an increase from the same period in 2013. Dubai’s top 10 tourism source markets remained unchanged bar slight changes in positioning. Saudi Arabia, India, UK, USA, Russia, China, Iran, Oman, Kuwait and Germany made up the top ten for January to June 2014. Read more

Oman set to lead Middle East tourism sector in 2014

The Sultanate of Oman is expected to lead the Middle East in terms of growth in the travel and tourism industry and post one of the strongest growth rates worldwide in the sector in 2014. This is according to a report released last month by the World Travel & Tourism Council. The Travel and Tourism Economic Impact 2014 assessed that the travel and tourism industry had directly contributed OMR 982.8m to Oman’s economy in 2013, which is 3% of the country’s total Gross Domestic Product (GDP). This forecast is to rise by 10.2% to OMR 1,082.7m in 2014. The surge in travel and tourism activities is expected to grow by 5.4 % per annum to Oman’s GDP, to reach OMR 1,834.2m by 2024, which is 3.9% of GDP. Read more

In line with its marketing plan for 2014, Oman will focus on promoting MICE, wedding and film tourism in the Indian market. The Ministry of Tourism, Oman along with Al Bustan Palace (a Ritz-Carlton Hotel) recently hosted a group of reputed wedding planners from India and provided them an opportunity to see and experience Oman as a viable option for weddings. Talking about MICE plans, Lubaina Sheerazi, India Representative, Oman, said: “The MICE market in India is booming at a rapid pace and there has been a steep increase of travel in this category. To increase awareness amongst corporates and travel trade about Oman as a MICE destination, we recently participated in MICE Travel Mart (MTM) in Mumbai and will also participate in MICE India & Luxury Travel Congress (MILTC), Experiential Planner, MTM Delhi. Middle East: Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre secures first major conference

The Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre (OCEC) has announced it will welcome its first major conference in December 2016, a matter of months after the US$1 billion facility is scheduled to open its doors for the first time. The 27th Annual International Association of Operative Millers (IAOM) Mideast & Africa District Conference and Expo will host more than 1,000 of the world’s top food industry professionals and regional decision-makers in a show that centres on food supply and new investment opportunities. “We are delighted that the Sultanate of Oman has been selected to host such a prestigious convention which will be the first important conference to be hosted by Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre upon its completion in 2016,” said HE Nasser Al Jashmi, Chairman of the Oman government’s tourist development body, Omran.
