Asia: Tokyo reworks subvention offerings for corporate planners

Tokyo Convention & Visitors Bureau last month refreshed its subvention programmes for planners who hold their events in the Japanese capital.   Corporate groups with at least 50 attendees staying for a minimum of two nights in Tokyo, but are still choosing additional destinations, are entitled to rewards based on a tiered system according to group size.   Delegates within a group of 50 will receive a giveaway per person, while groups of 200 or more will receive a gift, choice of party entertainment from ninjas to awaodori dance performances and welcome parties at Tokyo’s airports.   Groups consisting of 500 or more attendees will receive the same benefits but with an extra choice between a traditional noh performance or a pop culture one.   The event must be held in Tokyo by March 31, 2015 and cannot be affiliated with religious or political agendas.   Read more

Fortress at heart of city convention plans

A city in southern Japan is developing a convention facility alongside a historic fortress as it seeks to attract international business events, incentives and conferences.   Kumamoto Castle, which dates back to 1607, will be a focal point for a 34,000 sqm facility due to open in 2018 that will connected to the city’s historic icon via a rooftop garden walkway.   The city’s convention bureau chiefs hope to share in the rise of neighbouring prefectures in Japan’s Kyushu region such as Fukuoka, which is 35 minutes away from Kumamoto by high-speed train, and has a growing number of international air links.   Strengths Rather than being solely an excursion destination for post-conference groups from neighbouring cities, Kumamoto is seeking a place on Asia’s meetings and incentives circuit. Convention bureau chiefs want to do this without trying to wrest bids from larger cities and by playing to strengths such as the castle and surrounding scenery.   Read more

Fukuoka City ranked second in Japan for meetings

In the recently released 2012 statistics and rankings by the Japan National Tourist Organization (JNTO), a governmental body under the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, Fukuoka City was, once again, ranked second in Japan with a total of 252 meetings. This means the city has captured this position for the last 4 consecutive years.   In addition, the number of participants from international conventions held in the city increased by 80,000 from the previous year, amounting to the largest number of 171,049 in total.   Among other things, Fukuoka’s success can be partly attributed to its “all-city” approach to conventions through the establishment of the Fukuoka Directive Council comprising public, private, academic and civic sectors. Armed with a strategic road map and clear goals, the city, through the Fukuoka Convention & Visitors Bureau, has made significant inroads on the global platform.   Earlier this year, the city participated in its first MICE international trade show, IMEX in Frankfurt, and later dispatched a strong team of delegates to the ICCA Congress in Shanghai.   Read more
