ABU DHABI: The seventh season of Pepsi Indian Premier League was flagged off in Abu Dhabi with an opening event rich in cricketing pedigree as well as a generous dose of fun and frolic.   It began with a welcome note by H.E. Sheikh Nahayan Mubarak Al Nahayan, Minister of Culture, Youth & Community Development, in which he spoke of the UAE’s determination as a nation to move forward in the sporting field.   Then it was time for host, Ravi Shastri to invite the eight IPL captains to vow their allegiance to maintain the integrity of cricket by signing the MCC Spirit of Cricket plaque.   Staying with the subject of cricket’s pride, Sunil Gavaskar, interim President, BCCI-IPL, delivered a passionate speech about how he and his colleagues at the BCCI intend to take every possible measure to eradicate the very shadow of corruption from the sport. No opening ceremony for IPL this year?

The Indian cricket board (BCCI) is unlikely to stage an opening ceremony for IPL 7 which begins in the UAE on April 16. The UAE government has planned a gala dinner on April 15 but there are no plans, like in the past, to bring in Bollywood stars or international pop icons to perform at the event. According to BCCI sources, this will ensure that cricket remains the main focus during the event.   “This decision to avoid a mega opening ceremony was taken by top board officials. The UAE government is organising a dinner along with an oath-taking ceremony for the captains,” a top BCCI official said.   Read more

PepsiCo demands higher brand visibility at IPL in UAE

PepsiCo, title sponsor of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has demanded additional rights and visibility for its brands in cricket stadiums from the BCCI.   The demand came after the BCCI announced that phase 1 of the IPL will be played in UAE, keeping in mind the impending Lok Sabha elections.   It is speculated that by doing so, PepsiCo intends to leverage its brand in UAE, where it dominates three-quarters of the cola market. What’s more, PepsiCo is favoured by many in the Middle-East as a local brand as opposed to Coca-Cola which is perceived as an American brand. In contrast, the beverage major is lagging behind Coca-Cola in the Indian market.   The demand has been put forth as a compensation for the possible decline in financial clout that may be caused by the tournament to shift overseas. This worry is shared by all sponsors for the IPL, in addition to the existing anxiety caused by spot fixing scandal last year.   Read more

Bollywood glitz takes over IPL 2013 opening ceremony

Imagine this: Bollywood super stars Shah Rukh Khan , Pitbull, Deepika Padukone and Katrina Kaif dancing together to the tune of “give me everything tonight”.   No, it wasn’t one of your midnight dreams. It was a dream-come-true at the Yuba Bharati Kirangan on Tuesday. Terming the IPL opening ceremony a ‘gala’ would be an understatement.   It was madness personified as some of the best known Bollywood stars descended here to signal the start of the sixth edition of the IPL.   Excitement was writ large on the face of every performer and it came as no surprise that the 50,000-odd energetic spectators present too matched the performers, cheering them on from the word go.
