C&I destinations to watch in 2014

Leicester, Leeds and Aberdeen have big plans to emerge as three of the UK’s top conference and incentive destinations in 2014. Leicester “We don’t need to wait until 2017 to show ourselves off. We’re going to do it now.” This was the message from Leicester’s mayor after it lost out on their City of Culture bid to Hull. The bid for was built around illuminating the ‘creativity and diversity’ of the area. However, rather than letting it simmer for three years Leicester plans to kick-start its plans next summer with more details to follow in early in 2014. Aside from its cultural ambitions, Leicester’s potential as an events destination has seen significant growth due to its convenient and central location. China conference to bring 4,500 to Sydney

Mega incentive expected to reap US$20m for state economy Beijing-based health and skincare direct selling company Pro-Health China has chosen Sydney for its 2014 Annual Conference. Around 4,500 delegates are expected to gather in the New South Wales’ capital for a five-day incentive and training event pegged for the second half of the year. “Sydney is a dynamic city with many attractions that will give our distributors quite a unique travel experience,” says Pro-Health China president Jason Li. He adds that he is looking forward to working with Business Events Sydney over the next year to ensure that the company’s high achievers enjoy a rewarding and authentic Australian experience. While the itinerary has yet to be confirmed, the large-scale incentive is estimated to bring US$20 million in business to New South Wales. It also comes as Sydney works to offset concerns over the relocation of big events to an interim facility at Glebe Island while Darling Harbour convention facilities are redeveloped. Hawaii Tourism Authority Selects AEG to Manage Convention Center

After an extensive search, the Hawaii Tourism Authority, the state’s tourism agency, announced the selection of AEG Facilities (a subsidiary of the Anschutz Company) to manage the Hawaii Convention Center. AEG Facilities will be responsible for the management and operation of the HCC, as well as working collaboratively with the HTA’s “Meet Hawaii” team in marketing the convention center and the Hawaiian Islands as a business destination. “This announcement represents the rebirth of the convention center for a new era in Hawaii,” Mike McCartney, president and CEO of the HTA, said in a statement. “Our three priorities are to focus on further strengthening our ‘Meet Hawaii’ sales and marketing strategies, realigning HCC’s operations and management to elevate the facility’s global presence, and enhancing and expanding the function, use and service beyond a traditional convention center.” While the total tax revenue of the HCC has covered the cost of operations over the years, the HTA believes there is opportunity to perform at a more optimal level.
