Hong Kong exhibition industry remains strong

Despite uncertainties over the global economy, Hong Kong’s meeting and exhibition industry remains strong, according to a Hong Kong Exhibition and Convention Industry Association (HKECIA) survey. The survey of exhibition activities in 2013 was sent to 100 exhibitions, and responses from 93 exhibitions were recorded. Findings have showed that the total number of exhibiting companies in Hong Kong has increased by 3.7 per cent compared to 2012 to reach 62,101. Growth across all sectors was observed, particularly significant in international exhibiting companies, which experienced an 18.8 per cent jump, accompanied by a 5.5 per cent rise in regional exhibiting companies. Visitor numbers have seen a year-on-year rise of 6.5 per cent to 1,839,424. The number of Mainland Chinese visitors increased by 12.8 per cent, while Hong Kong visitors grew by 7.4 per cent. Border city offers a convenient excursion from Hong Kong By Mark Davis 9 July 2014 The gleaming high-rises and five-star hotels of Futian in Shenzhen show how the district has become the southern city’s economic centre. Throw in its proximity to Hong Kong, multinational companies, a convention and exhibition centre and Futian’s status as home for the new Shenzhen Stock Exchange building, then it appears the district’s prestige is complete. Beyond the business districts, however, more venues are coming online for groups seeking alternatives to the normality of downtown Shenzhen. Hilton Shenzhen Shekou Nanhai, which opened in December 2013, is one such option. It is strategically located 30 minutes from Hong Kong International Airport, with the border just across from Shenzhen Bay, and 40 minutes from Shenzhen International Airport. The hotel has meeting rooms spread across two floors and space for 500 on its third-level roof garden. A 15-minute drive from Shenzhen Bao-an International Airport is the Hilton Garden Inn Shenzhen Bao-an, which forms part of a large commercial centre. Transformers raid Hong Kong in ‘Age of Extinction’

Reuters) – “Transformers: Age of Extinction” will debut in Hong Kong cinemas on Thursday, where audiences are waiting to see giant shape shifting aliens try to destroy their city. The film, the fourth based on the Transformers franchise, is expected to become one of the highest-grossing movies of 2014, with the three prior films generating $2.7 billion in ticket sales at global box offices. The series performed particularly well in China, which is now the world’s second-largest film market, and Paramount Pictures took steps to appeal to Chinese audiences with its latest installment. Filming took place in Hong Kong and three mainland cities including scenes at the Great Wall. Chinese actress Li Bingbing was cast in the film, and four smaller parts were filled by actors chosen from a Chinese TV reality show. Last Thursday, the blockbuster had its grand global premiere in Hong Kong, the first Hollywood movie to do so in this Asian financial hub. China may be facing a case of oversupply in its luxury hotel scene. “When a new market opens up it is quite normal that you will see a lot of new supply go in,” Clement Kwok, CEO of Hong Kong and Shanghai Hotels tells CNBC. “At the moment many people see great future prospects for China and they are building hotels in China.” Hong Kong and Shanghai Hotels is the owner of the brand Peninsula with a total of nine hotels across the U.S. and Asia. Japanese city targets incentive travel

Kumamoto officials launch subsidy for groups of 30 or more Representatives from a Japanese city’s convention bureau have recently returned from promotional meetings with incentive travel organisers in Taiwan and Hong Kong. Kumamoto International Convention and Tourism Bureau officials have been highlighting the city’s new incentive travel subsidy. The city, in Japan’s southern Kyushu region, is seeking to attract a greater share of Asia’s meetings, incentives, conference and events business. The efforts follow Kumamoto being granted wider powers in 2012 by Japan’s parliament enabling the city to be promoted nationally and overseas. Shinichi Akahoshi, who heads the Kumamoto convention bureau’s incentive travel programme, says the city will work with neighbouring prefectures in Kyushu such as Fukuoka and Kagoshima, which have international air links. The Kumamoto Incentive Travel Subsidy assists group travel planners with accommodation and travel expenses and is primarily aimed at drawing incentive groups to Kumamoto City. Subsidies cover employee training, events such as awards ceremonies, visits to city sites and incentive tours for groups of 30 or more subject to conditions.
