German Convention Bureau Earns Industry Recognition from UNESCO

The Germany Convention Bureau’s (GCB) sustainability seminar program has landed the UNESCO award for “Project of the UN Decade.” This, along with updates on the sustainability codex and green certifications, highlight the news that the GCB shared this Earth Day 2014.   Project of the Decade Over the past two years, the GCB has hosted sustainability seminars in Germany to educate and certify more than 300 event planners to become green meeting experts. As a result, the GCB was recently awarded the “Project of the UN Decade” from the German arm of the United National Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). UNESCO recognized the GCB in the category of Education for Sustainable Development.   The requirements for the UNESCO award include that the project must provide knowledge and expertise from the three dimensions of sustainability: economic, social and environmental. Sustainability Seminars Honored by German UNESCO Commission

Seminars organized by the German Convention Bureau for sustainability advisors in the events sector have been awarded the title of Project of the UN Decade in “Education for Sustainable Development,” recognizing the GCB’s efforts to promote green meetings.   “Seminars for sustainability advisors demonstrate in an impressive way what future-oriented education could look like,” said Professor Gerhard de Haan, chairman of the National Committee and of the Jury for the UN Decade in Germany. “The jury voted for the project because it explains how people can operate on a sustainable basis in a way we can understand.”       Read More

German Convention Bureau Appoints First Sustainability Advisor

According to the Meeting & Event Barometer 2013, an annual study of the meetings market in Germany, nearly half of all meeting planners prefer suppliers with certified sustainability management systems. Meanwhile, nearly a third say German suppliers’ commitment to sustainability has a positive impact on the quality of their events.   With those data points in mind, the German Convention Bureau (GCB) has appointed Christine Koch to the newly created position of sustainability advisor, it announced this week.   A longtime GCB employee who previously handled database marketing projects for the organization, Koch has been actively involved in GCB’s sustainability efforts for many years, according to the organization, which cites her work on the seminar program for sustainability advisors offered by GCB in partnership with the German Federal Environmental Foundation, as well as her contributions to GCB’s Green Globe certification and its Sustainability Code for meetings in German-speaking countries.   Source: http://www.successfulmeetings.com

New edition of Meeting Point Cologne 2013/2014

Cologne Convention Bureau (CCB) builds on the key industry sectors strategy of the German Convention Bureau (GCB)   The Cologne Convention Bureau (CCB) has published a new edition of the Meeting Point Cologne manual for event planners. The new Meeting Point Cologne, which is now available, gives meeting planners comprehensive yet concise information about Cologne as a congress and conference destination. The brochure, which is almost 130 pages long, provides an overview of Cologne’s convention infrastructure as well as many interesting facts about the city in both German and English.   In terms of the content of the new brochure, the CCB builds on the key industry sectors strategy of the German Convention Bureau (GCB), emphasizing Cologne’s strengths as a science and economic hub. Both of these areas of expertise are increasingly relevant to international congress organizers when they choose the destination for their event.
