Events Industry Gathers to Support the International Festival for Business

The events industry added its support to the International Festival for Business with a two day programme (1-2 July) of meetings, events and networking within the festival’s host city of Liverpool. Representatives from across the business events industry were also treated to a familiarisation tour of Liverpool as part of a collaborative industry wide endorsement. Liverpool Convention Bureau, Liverpool Football Club and the Concerto Group at the Liver Building, provided the hospitality for the delegation, with ACC Liverpool creating a networking and hospitality hub exclusive to members of the UK events industry. “The International Festival for Business is a classic case of how one event can spur business growth and economic benefit across multiple industries,” commented Michael Foreman Head of External Relations for ABPCO, who leads the Event Industry Collaborative Initiatives committee. “Liverpool proved itself a warm, hospitable and dynamic host and the entire delegation were hugely impressed with the quality of facilities, and dedication from the city, it was really buzzing.” The delegation also heard speeches from ACC Liverpool Chief Executive Bob Prattey and Chris Brown, Director, Marketing Liverpool, both underlining the importance of a collaborative approach from the events industry to showcase its influence in business and its […]

Middle East: Creating separation between meetings and leisure

Joint Meetings Industry Council Executive Director Rod Cameron argues that failing to emphasise the distinction between leisure and meetings-related travel will hurt the sector. Something that has haunted the meetings industry for many years has now become a matter of real urgency, courtesy of the global recession and its fallout. That ‘something’ is our collective failure to more clearly distinguish between travel for personal and leisure-oriented reasons and that which is undertaken for business purposes. The reason this is so important is that those who make decisions about the organisation and financing of meetings, conventions, exhibitions and conferences, as well as those who decide who should attend them, are now highly sensitive to the appearance of such events as simply vehicles for personal enjoyment at public or corporate expense. In fact, just the word ‘tourism’ in association with such events suggests their real purpose is something other than their actual role as a primary tool for economic and professional development. Australia’s Business Events Industry Recovers

A new Business Events Council of Australia report is indicating that Australia’s business events industry has recovered from the recent economic downturn. The report shows that international conference delegate numbers grew last year as the nation increased its share of the global meetings market. According to the BECA 2012 State of the Industry Report, 190,000 people visited Australia last year to attend a conference or convention, up 11 percent over 2011. New Zealand remained the major source of conference visitors, with numbers rising 2.5 percent since 2011, while convention visitors from the USA grew 26 percent, numbers from China increased 23 percent and Japanese arrivals rose 16 percent. At the same time Australia’s market share of international association meetings increased to a ranking of 13th in 2012 compared to 16th in 2011 The report showed a decrease in the deficit between inbound and outbound convention travel with a 10 percent rise in arrivals and a 3 percent decrease in departures.
