Kempinski Looks to Boost MICE Appeal; Will Launch New Brand Standards

As the upscale Kempinski hotel brand stretches beyond its origins in Europe and into more continents, its meetings and events division is developing ways to appeal to C-level international clients from a range of backgrounds. We spoke with Kristina Mees, Kempinski’s new corporate director of group sales, to see how the luxury brand was adapting to changing needs while maintaining its traditional style. Mees, who took on her role in early July, has already launched initiatives to improve Kempinski’s offerings. The company recently completed a client survey that will help the team develop a level of standards that will remain consistent across the brand. The “Kempinski Group & Event Signature Standards” are set to roll out within the next six months, Mees said, and will focus on consistency in response time, site inspections and perks that can include anything from free rooms for planners to free Wi-Fi to free phone use. “Really, it’s a commitment from our side that all groups and events have certain standards when they’re held in a Kempinski hotel,” Mees said. IBTM Names Russia to Top 10 List for Europe Events

IBTM Global Research has revealed an increased level of optimism from European buyers and suppliers, with 93 percent of all buyer respondents predicting that conference and events business in Europe would either increase or stay the same over the next 12 months, compared with 86 percent in the last 12 months. Buyers selected the top ten countries for events in Europe over the coming year by volume. These include Spain, Italy, Switzerland, United Kingdom France, Germany, Russia, Ukraine, Netherlands and Turkey. Read More

Ninety suppliers and event planners from all over Germany, Austria and Switzerland gathered for the MICE Club. The MICE Club offered a program with high-caliber content. Highlights include the keynote speech on brand positioning by Rolf Gruber and a theme cloud on deceleration by Willem Stortelder, co-founder of the communications think tank “21 Lobster Street.” Mike van der Vijver was the moderator. EIBTM Industry Trends Watch Report Reveals Optimistic Outlook for 2014

UK: Business Visits and Events Partnership Backs Bid to Win International Business

The Business Visits and Events Partnership (BVEP) has welcomed the establishment of a Ministerial Support Initiative to improve bidding prospects for events. Under the scheme, event organisers can ask VisitEngland for government help, which was named as a priority in BVEP’s 2011 Subvention and Bid Support Practices report as part of a review to he industry win more international business. Now the BVEP has praised both VisitEngland and outgoing tourism minister Hugh Robertson for seeing the initiative through to establishment. VisitEngland led on the introduction of the initiative and has established a working process alongside the Department of Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS). London Venues: “We Don’t Do Deals”

London venues are steering away from discounting and offering added value in order to win events business, according to new research. The 2013 London Venues Business Report surveyed 110 venues and hotels across the capital and found that only 8 per cent won business by offering clients ‘added value’ (down from 26 per cent in 2012), while just 18 per cent used a discounting tactic. Day delegate rates (DDRs) were used by 57 per cent of venues to offer price flexibility – with the maximum level of discounts varying between 21-38 per cent, while 40 per cent of venues surveyed said they did not flex their prices in high or low demand periods at all. Personal and executive assistants have a growing role in planning internal and external corporate events, according to a probe by venue operator Late Night London. The research – supported by C&IT – surveyed 1,500 personal and executive assistants from businesses across the UK and found 96% of them are responsible for their company’s events. Respondents noted there has been a significant change in style of events during the past three years, as the recession has impacted upon both corporate internal and external events. 44% of respondents reported that more formal, costly events had been downscaled to some extent in the past few years. However the research found that internal and external corporate events were still a priority with 68% of the PAs and EAs surveyed noting that their employer strongly valued such events. According to the American Express Meetings & Events 2014 Global Meetings Forecast, following two years of modest budget and activity increases, flat or slight declines in meetings spend per organization are expected across all regions heading into 2014. Industry activity appears likely to stabilize due to a rise in meetings-related policies designed to ensure meetings comply with company guidelines and deliver against strategic objectives. Across all regions, meeting organizers will likely continue to face challenges as they strive to achieve more with flat or decreasing budgets expected, compared to previous years. In North America, nearly half of planners surveyed expect a slight increase (+1.5 percent overall for the region) in the number of meetings they expect in 2014. The number of attendees is also expected to increase slightly as companies try to maximize the overall value of each event and reduce the average cost per attendee. Read More
