IAEE Accepting Nominations for New International Excellence Award

The International Association of Exhibitions and Events™ (IAEE) announced today the newest addition to its awards program, the IAEE International Excellence Award. Great Scotland Yard to be transformed into luxury hotel

A £100m redevelopment of Great Scotland Yard, the former home of the London Metropolitan Police, will see it reopen in early 2016 as a luxury hotel with conference space. Plans to turn Great Scotland Yard into a five-star conference hotel have been given the go-ahead following an acquisition by London property developers Galliard Group. The former home of the London Metropolitan Police will be transformed into a seven-storey hotel with 235 rooms, a restaurant and bar and conference facilities for 120 delegates. Redeveloping the Grade II listed building is expected to cost £100m, which will include VIP suites worth up to £10,000 a night, making the hotel one of the most expensive in London. Read More

GBTA Report: Brazil to Surpass France, Italy & South Korea in Business Travel Spend

Brazil is expected to surpass South Korea, France and Italy in the business travel global spending rankings, according to the Global Business Travel Association, which just released its latest GBTA BTI Outlook report on Brazil as part of its semi-annual series. Key highlights of the GBTA BTI include: – GBTA BTI has downgraded its near-term outlook for Brazilian business travel as forecasted in the first half of 2013 due to experienced volatility as a result of slower than expected, but still robust economic growth at home and abroad, particularly through June 2013. – However, Brazilian total business travel spending is forecasted to grow 6.3 percent in 2013 to $31.8 billion and another 12.6 percent in 2014 to $35.8 billion, as the global economy gains momentum along with Brazilian domestic demand. – The weaker external environment and the subsequent drop-off in trade with Europe and the U.S. have hit Brazilian international outbound business travel spending particularly hard. How to Get The Most Out of Trade Shows

Forbes has a great article today with the very catchy title of “Why You Stink at Trade Shows.” The story includes tips on “how not to be that person” who irritates fellow attendees—whether buyers or sellers—at an expo. (The story is really for buyers at trade shows, but we think some of the ideas can apply to sellers just as easily.) Suggestions include taking pictures of people without asking first, cutting in line and otherwise generally rude behavior that would be objectionable in almost any situation. But the story has other notable tips, too, that are more specific for business networking or trade shows. For example, using Q&A time at a panel to pitch one’s business is just rude (leave that for the show floor or the networking sessions), as is taking up all of a panelist’s time afterwards for a private chat when other people also want to ask a question.
