Cirque de Soleil co-founder Daniel Gauthier has entered the hospitality sector with a $230 million investment in Le Massif de Charlevoix, a resort area along the St. Lawrence River, north of Quebec City. Long popular with Quebecois elites, Gauthier’s vision has put Charlevoix on the group meeting map. Gauthier purchased and expanded facilities at Le Massif de Charlevoix ski hill in Baie-Saint-Paul. He also built a 145-room eco-resort, Hotel La Ferme, on farmlands next to the ski hill. Cirque du Soleil is looking to diversify its repertoire by expanding into Broadway-style shows and is creating a new division called Cirque du Soleil Theatrical that will be headed by Las Vegas theater impresario Scott Zeiger. The Montreal-based Cirque said on Tuesday that the new division will mount new productions that will use the company’s signature style and aesthetic, but that will provide a “very different experience” for Cirque du Soleil audiences. Cirque du Soleil is producing the opening ceremony of Toronto’s 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games, the touring troupe says. “We are excited to create an original production for this special occasion,” Yasmine Khalil, director of Cirque’s events and special projects unit, said in a release Tuesday. The opening ceremony will showcase not only its troupe of performers, but also Ontario artists and volunteers, who will be recruited from local schools and community organizations closer to the Games. This time, the Canadian-based company will perform Dralion from Thursday, Sept. 19 to Saturday, Sept. 21. East meets West The show, which first debuted in 1999 and combines elements of traditional Chinese circus with Western contemporary circus in an “East-meets-West” theme, is named after a combination of the words “dragon and “lion:” In Dralion, the four elements that govern the natural order take on a human form. Thus embodied, each element is represented by its own evocative colour: air is blue; water is green; fire is red; earth is ochre.
