North Asia showcase highlights business events By Jacqueline Kot 11 April 2014 Australia’s North Asia Business Events Showcase comes to a close today in Shanghai as the country seeks to strengthen its position as the incentive destination of choice for Asian groups. Figures from the organisation’s ‘Tourism 2020’ report show that Australia welcomed 893,000 international business event delegates for the year ending September 2013, with a total expenditure of about US$12 billion. Some 86,000 Chinese business events visitors spent about $266 million in Australia during that period. China is now Australia’s third largest market for business events, behind the US at first place and New Zealand. It is the second largest market for in-bound tourism in general. Tourism Australia managing director, John O’Sullivan, says quality business facilities, food and wine, environment and world-class programmes for incentive groups of any size contributed to Australia’s appeal in China. “Last year Australia played host to two major incentives with Sydney hosting 3,000 Perfect China delegates and Gold Coast hosting 1,000 delegates from Herbalife China, and wowed them with a combination of business meetings and encounters with our nature and wildlife,” Mr O’Sullivan says. “There are indications that […]

Group hire of Hong Kong theme park shows strong growth Sustained results generated from business meetings and events have contributed to record revenue at Hong Kong Disneyland, the theme park’s executives say. Meeting, incentive and events bookings for companies have increased nearly four times since the resort opened in 2005. Overall figures for the 2013 fiscal year show a record 7.4 million visitors to Hong Kong Disneyland. This drove revenue up 15 per cent to US$631 million with net profit doubling to $31.2 million. Martin Leung, business solutions and events director at the resort, says several hundred groups have used indoor and outdoor venues at the resort. “The growth rate has accelerated greatly in the past five years, with MICE bookings for the resort having increased nearly four times,” says Leung. IT&CM China Returns in 2014 With Strong Business Generation

According to a 2011 Global Meetings Procurement Agency HelmsBriscoe report, the value of China’s conference and events industry was estimated at $150 billion, with tens of millions of conferences held every year. The Chinese MICE industry itself is increasing at 20 percent annually. Meanwhile, a 2012 study by PhoCusWright reveals doubling of China’s travel gross bookings over a span of 5 years, from $54.8 billion in 2009 to $105.5 billion in 2013. China World’s Biggest Travel Spender, Hotels.com Reports

Chinese travelers spent $102 billion on international travel in 2012, an increase of 40 percent from 2011 and enough to unseat the United States and Germany as the world’s biggest travel spenders, according to Hotels.com, which this week published its second annual Chinese International Travel Monitor (CITM). Based on a survey of more than 3,000 Chinese international travelers and more than 1,500 hoteliers worldwide, this year’s CITM report found that Chinese travelers now account for up to 5 percent of business for 75 percent of global hoteliers, nearly half of which (45 percent) say they’ve experienced an increase in Chinese guests over the past year. Of interest to meeting professionals are the following findings: • The majority of overseas Chinese travel (96 percent) has been for leisure purposes, although just over half (52 percent) have also visited other countries for business or education. • Nearly two thirds (62 percent) of Chinese travelers say they prefer to travel independently and not as part of a group.
