MPI: Canadian Business Events Generate Billions for Economy

The Meeting Professionals International Foundation Canada announced the preliminary results of the Canadian Economic Impact Study (CEIS) 3.0 on National Meetings Industry Day. The complete study will detail the economic significance of meetings–specifically business events–held in Canada in 2012, and is a continuation of reporting published in 2008 and later updated in 2009. Significantly, it is also the first report to quantify the value delivered by the meeting and event industry to Canada’s economy at the regional, provincial and metropolitan levels. “We believe this latest research will be instrumental toward enhancing the perception of the meeting and event industry in Canada–similar to past reports,” said Paul Van Deventer, president and CEO of MPI, in a statement. Cirque du Soleil looking to expand into Broadway-style shows

Cirque du Soleil is looking to diversify its repertoire by expanding into Broadway-style shows and is creating a new division called Cirque du Soleil Theatrical that will be headed by Las Vegas theater impresario Scott Zeiger. The Montreal-based Cirque said on Tuesday that the new division will mount new productions that will use the company’s signature style and aesthetic, but that will provide a “very different experience” for Cirque du Soleil audiences. Canada: Québec Convention Centre to Host Optimist Convention

Québec City and the Centre des Congrès de Québec will host the Optimist International 2016 Annual Convention. Running from June 29 to July 3, 2016, the convention will attract 1,300 delegates. The annual assembly arrives at Israel once in every five years, and convenes at the ICC Jerusalem. Nouvelle Prague is the first ever showcasing festival in the Czech Republic, held on 1-2 November in the Staropramen Brewery in the heart of Prague. Our focus is on connecting bands with festival bookers, and connecting the Czech music industry with their international counterparts. Bangalore Ranks as Top City in India for Business Travel

In all of India, Banaglore is the top business destination for business out of the top 25 most-visited cities in the world, Times of India is reporting. The city is ranked at No. 12 globally, followed by Mumbai at No. 20 in overnight hotel stays. Bangalore was ranked 11 in 2011, but dropped a spot last year. The average spend also decreased from around $258 to around $227 in terms of lodging ground transport, dining, entertainment, according to a report on corporate travel and entertainment compiled by Concur. The spend data of nine countries, including the U.S., U.K., Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Australia and India, was analyzed. Read More

CIBTM has also witnessed a notable increase in the amount of Corporate and Association Trade Visitors who have signed up to attend the show. Growth in the Trade Show and Event Planning industry in Canada is heavily dependent on the size of corporate marketing budgets and the ability for consumers to spend. “Most recently, corporate profit and disposable income have been on the rise, enabling industry revenue to reach prerecession levels,” says IBISWorld industry analyst Austen Sherman. IBISWorld estimates that the industry will build on its recent strong performance and increase an additional 2.0% to $1.5 billion in 2013. Recent growth has largely been propelled by expanding client marketing budgets as a result of a significant increase in corporate profit following the recession; according to the Center of Exhibition Industry Research (CEIR), nearly 40.0% of business-to-business marketing budgets in 2011 were spent on trade shows. However, the industry did have its plans for growth interrupted during the early part of the past five years. According to Sherman, “The Canadian economy mired in a recession for the majority of 2009, weighing on client marketing expenditures.” The effects on industry revenue were immediate and aggressive, resulting in a decline of 7.0% in that year. As a result, IBISWorld estimates industry revenue has risen at an annualized rate of just 1.4% during the five years to 2013. […]
