It’s a wrap: CIBTM concludes record show

CIBTM 2014 concluded on Friday and was held at the China National Convention Center in Beijing from September 17-19. The tradeshow attracted 5,300 industry professionals from China and abroad and boasted an increased exhibition space (up by 33 per cent), 449 exhibitors representing 35 countries and regions and a record number of international hosted buyers. The 424 hosted buyers enjoyed a pre-show tour of Beijing, taking in the Summer Palace, a rickshaw ride through the HuTong area and the Chinese Royal Gastronomy Museum. CIBTM also presents a comprehensive lineup of suppliers, including destination management companies, destinations, convention bureaus, hotels, technology suppliers, cruises lines and MICE services. Asia: Manila Hotel breathes new life into MICE spaces

The century-old Manila Hotel is vamping up its MICE facilities in order to grow MICE business from Asia in a refurbishment that will be complete by 3Q2014. Denise Tambuatco, senior vice president, marketing, said the hotel will draw from its competitive edge of well-preserved colonial architecture, and history as the Grand Dame of the Philippine hospitality scene. The Fiesta Pavilion will have its pillars taken down to increase capacity from 1,500 to 2,000 guests, and comes with new lighting technology for an element of drama. The brief The International World Wide Web Conference (WWW 2014) is held in a different country every year, providing a platform to discuss the latest developments in the field, how to standardise technology associated with the web and its continual impact on society. Challenges The main one was finding high profile speakers from both the private sector and the academic world, with the organisers hoping to secure some from other industries besides technology. While the organisers were unable to locate any prominent speakers from other industry sectors, the keynote speakers included Dr Jong-Deok Choi from Samsung Electronics, Professor Christos Faloutsos from Carnegie Mellon University and Dr Qi Lu from Microsoft. Industry experts from Google, Cisco, IBM, Yahoo and more addressed audiences throughout the week-long conference at Coex. The WWW 2014 programme was divided into six topical ‘tracks’ based on themes such as Research and Web Science, each chaired by a speaker. China may be facing a case of oversupply in its luxury hotel scene. “When a new market opens up it is quite normal that you will see a lot of new supply go in,” Clement Kwok, CEO of Hong Kong and Shanghai Hotels tells CNBC. “At the moment many people see great future prospects for China and they are building hotels in China.” Hong Kong and Shanghai Hotels is the owner of the brand Peninsula with a total of nine hotels across the U.S. and Asia. The Grand Hyatt Singapore unveiled its Level 2 events space yesterday, confident it will be as game-changing as its Mezza9 restaurant that gave the industry the show kitchen concept when it opened years ago. Gone are the standard break-out rooms and the typical boxy, pillarless banquet hall. Instead, Level 2 of the hotel now features 1,000m2 of flexible space that morphs into intimate dining or conference rooms which feel more like meeting in a private Peranakan home than in a nondescript hotel space. Okinawa is set to increase MICE visitorship with the construction of a major convention venue to accommodate events as large as 10,000 to 20,000 people. Koji Niimoto, supervisor for MICE marketing section of Okinawa Convention & Visitors Bureau (OCVB), told TTGmice e-Weekly that discussions and research are ongoing for a suitable location to build the venue, preferably near to Naha Airport, hotels and key attractions. Japanese city targets incentive travel

Kumamoto officials launch subsidy for groups of 30 or more Representatives from a Japanese city’s convention bureau have recently returned from promotional meetings with incentive travel organisers in Taiwan and Hong Kong. Kumamoto International Convention and Tourism Bureau officials have been highlighting the city’s new incentive travel subsidy. The city, in Japan’s southern Kyushu region, is seeking to attract a greater share of Asia’s meetings, incentives, conference and events business. The efforts follow Kumamoto being granted wider powers in 2012 by Japan’s parliament enabling the city to be promoted nationally and overseas. Shinichi Akahoshi, who heads the Kumamoto convention bureau’s incentive travel programme, says the city will work with neighbouring prefectures in Kyushu such as Fukuoka and Kagoshima, which have international air links. The Kumamoto Incentive Travel Subsidy assists group travel planners with accommodation and travel expenses and is primarily aimed at drawing incentive groups to Kumamoto City. Subsidies cover employee training, events such as awards ceremonies, visits to city sites and incentive tours for groups of 30 or more subject to conditions.
