Industry uniting after Bangkok shutdown

A study shows that Bangkok hotel room occupancy took a hit as anti-government protestors reached a peak in January – but two developments in the Thai capital led by sections of the hospitality sector show signs of determined recovery. The third Thailand Tourism Forum went ahead this week at the InterContinental Bangkok Grand Ballroom after being postponed due to a state of emergency – which has now been lifted – being declared by the Thai governmement. Another example of the industry uniting as tensions in the city ease, is the launch of the Bangkok Riverside Marketing Partnership. On April 18, a group of hotels agreed to work together to raise awareness of the Chao Phraya Riverside as a primary leisure and MICE destination in Bangkok for domestic and international visitors. Strategy to revitalise Thailand’s exhibitions

Thailand Convention & Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) has unveiled a new strategy for 2014 to lift the nation’s exhibitions industry. The three-year plan will focus on three key areas – facilitating business growth for the private sector, strengthening its international marketing campaign and identifying new business opportunities for the country’s exhibitions industry. Thailand’s international exhibition industry attracted over 190,000 delegates in 2013 and TCEB estimates that will increase by 5 per cent in 2014. Thailand reassures global planners

Thailand’s convention bureau has launched new financial support for planners alongside and extensive online marketing campaign to reinforce confidence among international event and incentive planners. Following recent political unrest in Bangkok, Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) has reallocated its marketing budget and introduced a range of new financial subsidies for corporate and association groups, alongside ‘Thailand CONNECT’, a new global marketing campaign. The campaign also offers financial support of up to US$6,000 for meeting and incentive event planners organising groups of more than 200 people that are staying for a minimum of five nights in Thailand. The bureau has dedicated more than $1.3 million towards online marketing in 2014 – its largest budget to date for online marketing. As part of this campaign, TCEB has launched a new business events website available in three languages – Thai, English and Chinese – with a further five language-versions to be introduced this year. Business events hit by Bangkok protests

Anti-government protests in the centre of Bangkok have led to international meeting planners postponing events or relocating them to other cities in Asia. Medical device company Abbott is one multinational that has switched a key regional meeting for its medical optics sales executives from the Thai capital. Abbott Medical Optics’ meeting planners told CEI Asia that a three-day turnaround effort was launched in the past few days to change the meeting to Hong Kong. The Tourism Authority of Thailand has also postponed local marketing activities for the month. The Four Seasons hotel in Bangkok has been forced to cancel several business events, and a major medical association event has been cancelled, due to mass protests that have blockaded major city centre roads. Senior director of public relations at Four Seasons Asia Pacific, Nicola Chilton, told London-based C&IT that the hotel has received several cancellations from the group and incentive sector this month. Bureaus and DMCs on regular programming despite some cancellations Amid ongoing anti-government demonstrations in the capital, Thailand’s Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) has emphasised that business events and activities in the city are proceeding as normal. According to the bureau, business venues in and around Bangkok have not been affected. Destination Asia Thailand’s CEO James Reed says that all of the company’s tours and activities in the Bangkok have continued and only isolated areas of the city have been disrupted by the protests. These are mainly the government buildings along Ratchadamnoen Avenue, the Laksi District, where the Department of Special Investigation and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs are located, the Ministry of Finance in Phayathai District, and the Government House in Dusit District. He says unlike the situation in 2010, where shopping malls and some tourist areas were taken over by demonstrators, the vast majority of Bangkok remains unaffected at this time, with international airports, public transport such as the SkyTrain and MTR, and city and provincial bus lines still running on regular schedules. Thailand sees 13% uplift in business travellers in 2013

The Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau used the EIBTM exhibition to announce a 13% uplift in business traveller numbers this year, to a little over one million visitors. The boost was mainly driven by the 315,000 visitors to conventions in the country and 247,000 participants in incentive trips this year. The Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) said it wants to target “high quality” business travelers in 2014 rather than concentrating on increased quantity. However, the bureau did say it has a target to increase business traveller numbers by 5% next year and business event revenue by 10%. European incentive and meeting organisers will be feeling the glare of a new campaign called ‘Thailand Connect – Your Global Business Events Connection’. Figures for 2013 released by Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) at EIBTM in Barcelona show Europe accounting for 10 per cent of the country’s business travel market outside Asia. A new ‘3Cs’ marketing strategy – ‘companion, customisation and creativity’ – is now being rolled by TCEB that will see Thailand no longer competing on price when it comes to creating benefits for business events, but instead on high quality market segments in conferences, incentives and exhibitions. Parichat Svetasreni, Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB)’s director of marketing and corporate image, unveiled an ambitious 2014 Strategic Plan aimed at boosting the ‘Thailand Brand as Asia’s premier business events destination’.
