Growth in Cape Town’s tourism sector remains steady, according to a recent report by Independent New Online. There are signs of revival in the city’s construction industry, with an almost 48% year-on-year rise in the value of building plans completed between July and September. The city’s Economic Information and Research Unit recently reported that Cape Town accounts for more than 70% of the province’s economic output. South Africa is positioning itself in the association bids arena as the country’s body unveils a partnership with convention bureau consultants Gaining Edge. The announcement at EIBTM in Barcelona comes as South African National Convention Bureau unveiled a campaign accompanied by a new website to introducie meeting facilities and opportunities to international delegates as well as event planners. The campaign is also aimed at transforming the ‘crying child’ image of Africa into one that personifies a ‘bold new continent’, says South African National Convention Bureau executive manager, Amanda Kotze-Nhlapo. “It’s now an effort by ourselves with city convention bureaus across South Africa working together to make this place some where that is easy to host your meetings,” Kotze-Nhlapo told a press conference and EIBTM. Thulani Nzima, South Africa Tourism’s CEO, said in a keynote address that Gaining Edge’s sales representatives in Europe will ensure that vital markets where associations have their headquarters will be covered. Tourism Minister highlights importance of South African business events sector

South African Tourism Minister Marthinus van Schalkwyk has emphasised the need for broad recognition in South Africa of the business events industry as a major driver of job creation and skills development. The Minister was speaking at IMEX 2013, which took place last month, where a number of other new developments focusing on South Africa were announced. Amanda Kotze-Nhlap, executive manager of the South African National Convention Bureau (SANCB), said that it will become the first convention bureau globally to roll out a customer relationship management system for the benefit of its regional convention bureaux.
