Big win for Manila

Routes Asia bound for the Philippines capital Annual route development forum Routes Asia will travel to Manila in 2016, a major win for the country’s aviation, business and tourism industries. The Philippine capital was announced as host during the related 20th World Route Development Forum in Chicago this week. The Philippine Department of Tourism will co-host the event with the Manila International Airport Authority, alongside stakeholders the Tourism Promotions Board and Mactan-Cebu International Airport Authority. “We are extremely honoured and excited to be given the opportunity to host Routes Asia 2016,” said Ramon R. Jimenez, Jr., secretary, Philippine Department of Tourism. “Trade, investment and tourism in the country have grown very rapidly in the last few years creating numerous opportunities for expanding air routes to major points in Asia and the rest of the world.” The event will take place from March 6-8, 2016 and is expected to attract hundreds of top-level regional and international aviation industry professionals to Manila. Asia: Manila Hotel breathes new life into MICE spaces

The century-old Manila Hotel is vamping up its MICE facilities in order to grow MICE business from Asia in a refurbishment that will be complete by 3Q2014. Denise Tambuatco, senior vice president, marketing, said the hotel will draw from its competitive edge of well-preserved colonial architecture, and history as the Grand Dame of the Philippine hospitality scene. The Fiesta Pavilion will have its pillars taken down to increase capacity from 1,500 to 2,000 guests, and comes with new lighting technology for an element of drama. The Association for Inbound Golf Tourism Philippines (AIGTP) will bid to host the Asian Golf Tourism Convention (AGTC) in 2016, president Connie Mamaril said. As a prelude to the Philippines’ bid to host AGTC 2016, Mamaril said a golf fam tour for media and tour operators will be held from October 5 to 9 in Manila and Boracay. The Philippine Retailers Association (PRA) has trounced its counterparts in Thailand and Australia in bidding for the 17th Asia Pacific Retailers Convention and Exhibition (APRCE) next year. Asked what’s PRA’s winning formula, assistant secretary general, Ana Marie Miranda, said: “We showcased why it’s More Fun in the Philippines – both in the retail business side (since attendees are retailers, we highlighted our world class shopping centres), as well as the tourism side. We made them want to come to the Philippines both for business and leisure.” APRCE is the main activity of the Federation of Asia-Pacific Retailers Associations, which has 17 association members from 17 countries.
