Recruitment commences for new Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre

Venue management specialist, AEG Ogden has commenced its recruitment drive for the initial key positions for the Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre following the appointment of the General Manager last month. The search has commenced for a Director of Sales & Marketing and Sales Manager – Exhibitions to become a part of this iconic project for the Sultanate of Oman. General Manager for the Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre, Mr Trevor McCartney said that the recruitment of these roles and other senior executive positions was another major milestone in the lead up to the completion of the venue in late 2016. Located four kilometres from the Muscat International Airport, the Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre is being constructed in two stages. Stage One, incorporating 22,000 sqm of exhibition space will be completed in 2015, followed by Stage Two, featuring 3,200 and 450 seat tiered theatres, 14 meeting rooms and two ballrooms due for completion in late 2016. The opening of the Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre (OCEC) will significantly boost the meetings sector’s contribution to the sultanate’s inbound tourism figures, an industry report has claimed. The meetings sector accounted for eight percent of inbound tourism to Oman in 2011 and is expected to grow to between 12 and 15 percent in 2014 according to a study of the sultanate’s hotel industry conducted by Colliers International in November 2013. Two Muscat hotels – The Park Inn by Radisson Muscat and Sifawy Boutique Hotel – have expanded their meeting space to cater to demand from this sector. The Park Inn by Radisson Muscat has doubled the size of its meeting space in response to a growing demand from planners selecting the hotel for their meetings. The property’s three meeting rooms, named Red, Yellow and Green, now offer an additional 100 square metres of space, enabling the hotel to handle larger groups in addition to the small- and mid-size groups it currently attracts. Sultanate of Oman seeks events growth with PCMA partnership

The Sultanate of Oman is looking to boost events business to the region and has signed a deal with the Professional Convention Management Association (PCMA) to help it achieve its ambition. The PCMA has been briefed by the sultanate and AEG Ogden to provide supply chain training in the build-up to the opening of the Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre in 2016. The venue will be operated by AEG Ogden. The training will be provided though the PCMA’s accreditation programme, and will examine areas such as sales, service and meetings logistics. The PCMA will also hold two advisory summits involving senior meetings executives, selected according to the sultanate’s target sectors.
