Mohammed Assaf at Fifa Congress opening ceremony

Arab Idol winner Mohammed Assaf just got the gig of a lifetime. The Palestinian singer has been roped in to perform at the opening ceremony of the Fifa Congress, usually held as a run up to the football World Cup. The Congress’ opening ceremony this year is to be held in Sao Paulo, Brazil, on June 10, two days before the grand opening on June 12. With this honour, Assaf, a former wedding singer from a refugee camp in the Gaza Strip, will become the first Arab singer to perform at such a global event. Assaf, who has been touring the region following his win of the Arab Idol contest in June last year, will record the song in Dubai with the help of Grammy-winning producer Rodney ‘Darkchild’ Jerkins, known for his work with Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston. São Paulo prepares to host Rotary International Convention 2015

Last week, with only slightly over one year to go until the 2015 Rotary International Convention, the city of São Paulo welcomed a delegation of 30 voluntary Rotarians from a number of countries including China, South Korea, Nigeria, the United States, Uruguay, Cuba, Japan, the United Kingdom, India, the Philippines and Germany. The President of Rotary International, Gary Huang, and his wifeCorinna, along with Brazilian members of the Host Organizing Committee – HOC, accompanied the group. These volunteers will be responsible for promoting São Paulo among their peers around the world in order to attract as many Rotarians and their companions as possible to the International Convention that expects to receive more than 35.000 participants. “The mission we shared with SPTURIS (São Paulo Tourism) was to help them plan their schedule for these visits and recommend our associates, event venues and tourist sights in the city,” explained Toni Sando, President of SPCVB. GBTA Report: Brazil to Surpass France, Italy & South Korea in Business Travel Spend

Brazil is expected to surpass South Korea, France and Italy in the business travel global spending rankings, according to the Global Business Travel Association, which just released its latest GBTA BTI Outlook report on Brazil as part of its semi-annual series. Key highlights of the GBTA BTI include: – GBTA BTI has downgraded its near-term outlook for Brazilian business travel as forecasted in the first half of 2013 due to experienced volatility as a result of slower than expected, but still robust economic growth at home and abroad, particularly through June 2013. – However, Brazilian total business travel spending is forecasted to grow 6.3 percent in 2013 to $31.8 billion and another 12.6 percent in 2014 to $35.8 billion, as the global economy gains momentum along with Brazilian domestic demand. – The weaker external environment and the subsequent drop-off in trade with Europe and the U.S. have hit Brazilian international outbound business travel spending particularly hard. Club Med recently announced the relaunch of Rio das Pedras in Brazil after extensive renovations including upgrades to its convention center and the addition of a new adults-only quiet pool. Located southern Rio de Janeiro, this eco-resort is situated between the Mata Atlântica—one of the world’s most ecologically diverse rainforests—and nearly 2,000 feet of private beach. Brazil business travel spend up 14.3%, says HRG research

The data from HRG Brasil, a partner for Hogg Robinson Group (HRG), revealed double digit growth in Brasil, across corporate travel and events during 2012, with continued optimism for 2013 and beyond. Findings from the Brasilian Corporate Travel and Meetings Index, unveiled at HRG’s Second Latin American Forum in São Paulo, showed over 12% year on year growth in terms of corporate travel in 2012, while activity relating to meetings groups and events grew by 39%. The Index, prepared by analysing transactions in Brazil, revealed a number of significant activity spikes during 2012, including a 67% year on year growth in November 2012.
