Vienna’s 2013 congress report contains first-rate results: Over 3,000 congresses and corporate events, and – for the first time ever – over a half a million delegates represent a new record. In the year 2013, 501,337 delegates (+1% on 2012) attended 3,389 congresses and corporate events in Vienna, 13 more than the previous year. Nevertheless, the resulting 1,401,888 bednights fell short of the preceding year’s exceptionally high level (-8%). The national value-added generated by the Vienna conference industry contributed 832.17 million euros to Austria’s gross domestic product, securing 16,000 year-round jobs in the process. In total, Vienna recorded around 12.7 million visitor overnights in 2013. Congress tourism accounted for 11% of this amount. In June 2016 the Austria Center Vienna will be the venue for one of Europe’s largest annual congresses. The 53rd European Renal Association – European Dialysis and Transplant Association (ERA-EDTA) Congress – will be attended by delegates counted in thousands. The President of the Congress will be Professor Dr Gert Mayer, Head of the Department of Internal Medicine at the Medical University Innsbruck, a specialist in nephrology and hypertension. A company based in Prague will again play a large part in the organisation of the Congress. It is C-IN, a member of IAPCO. As the official housing agent, C-IN will provide services that include visa management, airport transfers, provision of hospitality staff along with complete hotel administration. Each year more than 450 balls take place in Vienna. The city of waltzes exuberantly celebrates Carnival in January and February. The three-quarter rhythm is supplemented by more contemporary sounds, offering enjoyable dancing for every taste. In Vienna, the ball season reaches its peak in January and February. From 24 January to 9 March 2014, City Hall Square (Rathausplatz) will be transformed into a gigantic ice surface, making it a paradise for ice skating fans of all ages. The dreamily lit facade of City Hall forms the backdrop for the Vienna Ice World. The 7000 square meter surface offers ice-skating fans a fabulous landscape of ice. Skaters of all styles, from spirited and wild to sweeping and elegant, can glide around the rink daily from 9 am to 10 pm to the hits of the 80s and 90s as well as waltzes. A fantastic ice path about 750 meters long will snake through the romantically lit City Hall Park. In addition, six curling rinks await visitors. At various outdoor stalls and in the Almhütte, gastronomes pamper guests with culinary delicacies from around the world. Who can forget the opening sequence in The Sound of Music with those panoramic views of Salzkammergut, Salzburg’s Lake District? With its majestic mountains, Salzburg is an ultimate destination for winter events. During the winter, Alpine skiing or snow shoeing at Untersberg, cross-country skiing on groomed trails at the Gaisberg and in nearby Hellbrunn and ice skating at Mozart Square are, of course, natural choices. There are many other things to do in Salzburg during the winter. For next winter, you can plan to take in Winterfest, an annual event from late November until early January. Tents are set up at a park called Volksgarten in the middle of Salzburg. Circus artists from all over the world put on performances in a snowy setting. Good news from Austria this week, where Vienna has set a new record for overnight stays, and continues to lead the world as a convention capital when the city hosted to 195 international meetings in 2012. The International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) affirmed its status as number one convention city for the eighth time in a row. From January to June of 2013, about 5.7 million overnight guests were registered, a full 3.1 percent more than during the same period in 2012. PRE-COLD WAR THAW, Vienna was often seen as a somewhat staid and sleepy relic, flanked on three sides by the Iron Curtain countries of Hungary, Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia. A rather sorry image for a city that for centuries held mighty status as a seat of empire – from Hapsburg to Holy Roman, to Austro-Hungarian. But times have changed again, and Vienna is riding high as a key meetings destination. In the International Congress and Convention Association’s (ICCA) recently published rankings for international association events, Vienna retained its position as number 1 in the world for the eighth year running, with 195 events, up from 181 in 2011.
